IXXI welcomes Lotte Dirks

About Lotte Dirks
Lotte wanted to become an illustrator before she even knew what an illustrator did. “My parents always encouraged me to do what I liked to do most. Creating something new was my favourite thing to do when I was small, so I just carried on doing it”, explains Lotte. ‘After secondary school, I went to a creative vocational school and then chose to continue my education at the Art Academy in Breda. That is when my passion for illustration really began!”

Source of inspiration
Lotte finds inspiration for her illustrations from all sorts of everyday items, even from her childhood. The green garden of her family home, the farmers’ market or even a bunch of flowers that she picked. These memories form the basis of her colourful and carefully crafted illustrations which always demonstrate a fantastic eye for detail. Despite the diversity of her subjects, nature is one of her favourites. This is very clear in her illustrations, almost all of which include a plant or flower. “I just can't get enough of drawing flowers and plants, in all their various forms and colours. After a lovely walk in the woods, I am completely inspired and see a whole range of opportunities for designs. Then, the illustrator in me gets to work!”

From pencil sketch to Photoshop
Even though the end result of Lotte’s work is usually digital, she likes to work in an old-school manner. She starts every illustration with a pencil sketch and a little paint and then adjusts the colours at a later stage, in Photoshop. “I love combining hand-made with the benefits of digital work”, explains Lotte. All prints are made on her own initiative but with the idea that it would look nice on someone’s wall. “I like making my illustrations accessible.”

Big dream
You’ve probably already noticed that ‘nature’ is Lotte’s great love and source of inspiration. But making patterns is her dream task. I love turning my illustrations into colourful patterns. It is my big dream to see them on wallpaper, gift wrap or kitchen roll and other types of wall decoration. She has taken her first step with the exclusive IXXI x Lotte Dirks collection.

Curious about her colourful illustrations and can't wait to create an eye-catcher with one of Lotte’s creations? See the complete collection here!
