Every month we highlight a 'story behind...' to give you a bit more background information about that beautiful image or because the image has a remarkable story. This month we want to tell you the story behind “Girl with balloon”, which should definitely also be listed as a remarkable story. Because the way that the artist Banksy operates is truly unique!
First, let us first give you a brief introduction about the man himself. Banksy is a pseudonym of a British artist. Nobody knows who Banksy is exactly but his artworks are known all over the world. In particular the political and humoristic nature of his artwork resulted in much media publicity. And then we did not even mention his stunts. His street-art can mostly be found in Europe, but graffiti has also been spotted in the Palestinian Territories and the United States.
But what about those stunts, we hear you think? Banksy managed to get publicity with a number of stunts. For instance, in 2005 he secretly placed his works in several authoritative museums. In 2015 he opened an anti-amusement park named Dismaland as a parody of Disneyland and in October 2018 the painting “Girl with balloon” was shredded in half immediately after the auction at the London auction house. Banksy had concealed a shredder in the frame. This will be known as the first artwork that was created live at an auction.
But what is the idea behind the famous work “Girl with balloon”? Initially you see the charming painting of a young girl that reaches up to her lost, heart-shaped balloon. But what is the message that Banksy wants to convey? The heart refers to love, hope, innocence, youthfulness and self-assurance. It is not clear if the artwork is meant to show loss of hope or that the desire is out of reach. Banksy probably intentionally chose to give the artwork a double interpretation. What do you think?
