When you're well rested it shows in everything: you're relaxed, sharp and friendly. You're awake. Getting to bed on time and having enough sleep is the difference between winning and losing. Between yawning and having a laugh on your first date. We start by giving you a few facts. On average, we spend a third of our life sleeping. But what actually happens while you’re enjoying your dream time?

  1. Your brain is still active while you're asleep, but in a completely different way than when you’re awake. Think of it as a sort of maintenance; all the information you’ve received during the day is processed, cleaned up and archived in your long-term memory.
  2. Your muscles also relax while you’re asleep. That is really necessary because you use your muscles almost all day long. During your sleep your body gets an opportunity to recover.
  3. On average, you dream for around two hours every night. You mostly dream in the ‘second part of the night’. Dreaming is definitely beneficial because it helps you to process emotions. Usually, you can’t remember very much the following morning but everyone still has at least 5 dreams a night. Most people only remember one or two a week.

So how do you make sure that you’re getting the optimum amount of sleep each night? And what do you need to be able to start your day fresh and invigorated? The amount of sleep you need is different for everyone, but a good average is somewhere between 7 and 9 hours a night. The quality of these hours is what is important. So if your sleep time could use some improvement: these three tips will turn your snoozes into real power naps!

  1. Keep it regular. Try to get up and go to bed around the same time every day. Your body gets used to this and it creates a natural balance.
  2. It sounds logical, but a good bed and mattress is key! A good quality mattress supports your body optimally, which ensures that you can recover properly. Well ventilated materials are also important, because you lose around 350 cc of liquid every night. For the mathematicians: that’s 1200 litres a year!
  3. Spend time outside. Not at night of course, but definitely during the day. If you’re active outside in the fresh air and get a lot of daylight, it ensures that you sleep better at night.
