Tip 1: Take holiday photos like a pro!

Are you planning a fantastic holiday or are you going for a staycation this year? It doesn't matter what your plans are: we all want to make great holiday photos! That is why we are giving you tips for taking the perfect holiday shots this summer. This week a series of basic tips are on the menu for you, served by lifestyle and travel photographer Emma Peijnenburg. She tells you exactly how you can fill your (mobile) album with the most beautiful summer images. Want to read more?

Tip 1

Check check, double check!
Of course you’ve already packed your best outfits - for strolling along the boulevard - in your suitcase, because: first things first. But don't forget to put your camera or smartphone with a good camera at the top of your checklist. You don't have to take all kinds of stuff with you to create beautiful photos. Emma Peijnenburg explains: “I often take my bigger single-lens reflex camera and my system camera. So I can always switch and I’m sure of always being able to take great photos, if something happens to one of the two cameras. I also make sure I have enough batteries and my tripod. That's it”. Don't feel like dragging around one or more cameras? Nowadays you can also take really beautiful photos with your smartphone!

Tip 1

Just do it
As a photographer, Emma knows better than anyone that basic elements are important for taking a good photo. She also gives an important tip: “Try to let go of the standard tips for taking a perfect photo as quickly as possible and make it your own. That way you can let your feelings and creativity run free. Obviously, it’s great that you know how your camera works and how to handle it but after that make sure you get to work in your own way”. Emma always looks for something to make the image more exciting or to give it more feeling. She is a huge fan of shooting against the light, capturing shadows and silhouettes and playing with motion blur. Photographing through something (such as through flowers or a window) is also a technique that she likes using for her photos. "This immediately adds a sense of depth to the photo," Emma explains.

Tip 1

Tip 1

Burn baby burn
Looking for the perfect light? Usually the sun on holiday is brightest around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. That’s exactly when it’s difficult to take a great photo, because the result is often very pale. Emma explains when it actually is the right timing. “Get out early in the morning or head for the evening sun. I always immediately check the times of sunrise and sunset in the country where I am and definitely it into account if I can plan something. It also depends a lot on what you’re going to shoot: the bright sun can be really cool if you want to play with long shadows. Golden hour (sunrise and sunset) is my favorite for sure!". Just notice it :-)

Tip 1

Your best friends: Pinterest and Google Maps
If you ask Emma for a real must-know tip, she gives a really good one: get to know the culture before you travel. “Start a conversation as soon as you get there, walk in random streets and show interest. That’s exactly how you find most beautiful places and create opportunities for your photography. Don't be afraid to talk to people, if you’re friendly and polite you have nothing to lose," says Emma. She also always checks the destination on Pinterest in advance and saves the best finds on Google Maps. “I give the most beautiful locations in Google Maps a star, so that I always know whether there’s a special place somewhere nearby. The rest is a bonus!”.
