IXXI x Van Gogh Museum

About the Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh museum, the museum about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and, after the Rijksmuseum, the most visited museum in the Netherlands.

The Van Gogh museum, the museum about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and, after the Rijksmuseum, the most visited museum in the Netherlands.

It is hard to imagine that Vincent van Gogh only sold two paintings in his lifetime. After his death in 1890, Vincent bequeathed all his work to his younger brother. The oeuvre largely stayed together over the years and was sold in its entirety to the state in 1962. The most important condition was that the entire collection would be housed in a museum dedicated to Van Gogh. And so it happened, in 1973 the Van Gogh museum opened its doors. The collection contains more than two hundred paintings, five hundred drawings and seven hundred letters by Vincent van Gogh.
